چکیده
Flavonoicl synthesis is, in many plants, either promloted by light or (lepen(lent upoIn light (3). The nature of this light re(quirement appears to vary depending UpOnl the conmpounds ancl plant miiaterials being studiedl ( 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 ), and little is known regalrding the relationship between photoinduced sy-nthesis of these compounds and photoincluced growth an(l (levelopmlenit. In etiolated pea plumules, low intensity red light stimulates both leaf growth (20, 25) ancl the procluction of an in(lole-3-acetic atcid oxidcase inhibitor (13). This inhibitor has quite recently been found to contain kaeempferol-3-triglucoside (KG) and kaemplpferol-3(triglucosv-l-p-coumarate) (KGC) (9,10,18). The purposes of the present investigation were, firstly, to (letermine the effect of re(d an(d far-re(d irradiation on the biosynthesis of KGC an(d KG, and, seccundly, to dletermine whether their synthesis is relatecl to photomorphogenic processes. The results obtained show that the red/far-red pigment systenm, phytochrome, does in(leed affect both leaf growth atncl KGC biosynthesis sinilarly in peas, although it appears to have little effect on KG biosynthesis. The results provi(le no evidlence that the levels of these kaempferol complexes affect see(dling growth in vivo.

An effect of light on the production of ethylene and the growth of the plumular portion of etiolated pea seedlings.
The production of ethylene by etiolated pea epicotyls (Pisum sativum L., cv. Alaska) is confined to the plumule and plumular hook portion of the epicotyl, and occurs at a rate of about 6 mul.kg(-1).hr(-1). Such a rate is sufficient to give physiologically active concentrations of ethylene within the tissue. Exposure of etiolated seedlings to a single dose of red light caused a transient decreas...
متن کاملPhytochrome Control of Cell Wall-bound Hydroxyproline Content in Etiolated Pea Epicotyls.
The red light inhibition of growth of the intact pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) third internode was correlated with an increase in the content of cell wall-bound hydroxyproline. These changes were detected 3 hours after irradiation, and possibly at 1 hour. Far red light reversed the effects of red light. The iron chelator alpha,alpha'-dipyridyl reversed the red light effects on both growth a...
متن کاملLight regulation of the abundance of mRNA encoding a nucleolin-like protein localized in the nucleoli of pea nuclei.
A cDNA encoding a nucleolar protein was selected from a pea (Pisum sativum) plumule library, cloned, and sequenced. The translated sequence of the cDNA has significant percent identity to Xenopus laevis nucleolin (31%), the alfalfa (Medicago sativa) nucleolin homolog (66%), and the yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) nucleolin homolog (NSR1) (28%). It also has sequence patterns in its primary stru...
متن کاملLack of influence of phytochrome on membrane permeability to tritiated water.
The water permeability of tissues was investigated by measuring the efflux of (3)HHO from previously loaded (in darkness) etiolated bean buds (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Red Kidney), pea epicotyl segments (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska), and oat coleoptile segments (Avena sativa L. var. Garry). Red light, far red light, or darkness was applied at the time of transfer of tissue from labeled to un...
متن کاملRed light and auxin effects on rubidium uptake by oat coleoptile and pea epicotyl segments.
Apical segments of etiolated oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Victory) coleoptiles showed enhanced uptake of [(86)Rb(+)] when tested 30 minutes after a 5-minute red irradiation. The response was partly reversible by far red light. Uptake was sensitive to carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone, but not to isotonic mannitol. Indoleacetic acid (10(-7) molar) caused a very pronounced and rapid stimulati...
